Smart cash register vs POS terminal: what is the difference and which one your business needs

How a smart cash register differs from a bank POS terminal, what an Android POS can do, how acquiring is connected and which setup suits a shop, café or service point.

In Azerbaijan the words “smart kassa” and “POS terminal” are often used interchangeably, yet they are different devices with different jobs. A cash register records the sale and prints the receipt; a POS terminal accepts card payments. Modern Android devices can combine both in one body, which is exactly what makes the choice confusing. Here is a plain explanation.

What a cash register does

A cash register (including the new generation of online registers) records the sale for tax purposes and hands the receipt to the customer. Requirements are set by the State Tax Service, and which models can be registered is confirmed with the operator or bank offering them. Inside there is software, a receipt printer and usually a barcode scanner.

What a POS terminal does

A POS terminal accepts payment by card, phone (NFC) or QR through an acquiring bank. It connects to the bank’s processing centre, so the terminal must carry PCI PTS and EMV certifications. The terminal is usually supplied by the bank, or the business buys a model agreed with the bank.

Android POS: one device instead of two

Android terminals such as the TOPWISE T6 both accept payments and run a cash register app: product selection, receipt printing, discounts, reports. For a small shop or café that means one device, one printer and one battery on the counter. For a larger store the terminal connects to the existing POS system as a PIN pad, and the till software stays unchanged.

Which setup fits whom

  • Small shop, kiosk, beauty salon: one Android terminal with a cash register app. Minimum hardware and space.
  • Café and restaurant: a terminal that travels to the table (T6 or the T6 Pro with a customer display) integrated with the till. More in choosing a terminal for a restaurant.
  • Supermarket and chains: a stationary till (Windows or Android) plus a separate PIN pad such as the TP10 at every lane.
  • Delivery and field service: the light, printer-less T6M; receipts are sent electronically.

What to check before buying

  1. Does the acquiring bank support the model. Banks connect only certified models integrated with their processing.
  2. Does your till software run on the device. Ask the software vendor for the list of supported models.
  3. Connectivity. Wi-Fi plus 4G and two SIM slots: sales must not stop when one link drops.
  4. Service. Local spare parts, a swap pool and remote updates (TMS).

Frequently asked questions

Does a smart cash register replace a POS terminal?

No. The register records the sale, the terminal accepts card payments through the bank. An Android device can combine both, but the payment function still requires an acquiring bank connection.

Is it better to get the terminal from the bank or buy it?

Both options exist. The bank supplies terminals on its own terms; a business can also buy a model agreed with the bank. Large chains and providers usually buy centrally.

Which cash register software runs on an Android terminal?

Any till app adapted for Android POS. Confirm support for the specific model with your software vendor.
