What RSP is
RSP (Remote SIM Provisioning) describes how an operator profile is downloaded over the air into an eUICC chip. The subscriber scans a QR code or confirms installation in an app, and a minute later the number works. The rules are set by GSMA, and the security of the server side is confirmed by an SAS-SM audit.
What the operator gains
- Activation without a store. Numbers sold online, in a bank’s or partner’s app, with no plastic logistics.
- A second number in a minute. Tourists, corporate lines and trial tariffs connect instantly, which is additional ARPU.
- IoT and M2M. Meters, terminals, vehicles and trackers get a profile at the factory or in the field, without swapping a SIM.
- Less plastic and logistics. Every eSIM saves the production, shipping and storage of a physical card.
What is needed to launch
- Compatible chips and profiles. eUICC modules for devices and profiles for the operator’s network.
- An RSP platform. The server side that stores, issues and revokes profiles; it can be cloud-hosted or hosted by the operator.
- Integration with billing and CRM. An eSIM order should follow the same path as a regular SIM: KYC, tariff, activation.
- Support at points of sale. Staff must be able to issue a QR code and help transfer a number between devices.
On security
A profile contains the subscriber’s authentication keys, so both eSIM production and the RSP platform must meet GSMA requirements. When choosing a supplier, ask for confirmation of SAS-UP compliance for production and SAS-SM for profile management.
